Work Rider

Work Riders duties include Riding the horses in order to exercise them, without injury or undue stress, to ensure their top physical condition prior to racing. Work riders normally have a similar physical build to the jockeys who race horses, so that the horse is exercised under conditions comparable to racing. This is vital as it allows the trainer or owner to judge where and when to race their horse. They do not race horses in competition, only in practice. Some Work Riders may be employed just to ride horses, with no other duties.

Yard Staff

The Yard Person is a member of the Housekeeping team and is responsible for working as part of the Yard Staff Team and for ensuring that tasks are completed to schedule. Our Yards team are expected to be punctual, clean & smart and able to communicate with all staff, student and college users in a courteous manner. They are also expected to be able to carry out instructions in a timely manner.

Stud Groom

A stud groom is a skilled farmhand and is likely to be involved in coordinating a wide range of horse breeding activities such as caring for and foaling-down broodmares, carrying out mare mating procedures, handling and care of stallions, establishing and conserving pastures and crops.

The Stud Groom is second in charge to the Stud Manager and they have many extra responsibilities to those of a Stud Hand. These include the welfare of the horses, feeding, exercising, liaising with the vet and farrier, teasing and covering, attending to mares and foals during and after foaling, maintaining the stud records.

Trainer

horseback riding Training does not demand athletic aptitude or single minded dedication, nor is it necessary to have learnt to ride when as a child in order to be a good horseman or horsewoman in later life. Riding is an activity in which the learning process never stops. From the day you first mount on a horse to the day you hang your riding boots, you will always find that you are discovering new things, new aspects of riding technique.

Work Groom

Grooms are generally responsible for tasks such as mucking out stalls, feed preparation and distribution, cleaning and refilling water containers, grooming and bathing, cleaning tack, bandaging legs, tacking up, and administering basic first aid for cuts and scrapes. Grooms with riding skills may warm up or cool out a horse for its rider. Grooms also hold horses for treatment by the farrier and veterinarian, assist with preparations for shipping horses to shows or races, and operate various pieces of farm equipment. The groom is expected to report back to those in management when they notice any injuries, changes in behavior, or potential hazards.
